Hatch End High School - Case Study

23rd November 2017

Hatch End High School is a high performing, inclusive, secondary school in Harrow. Staff care about and are committed to each student’s academic success and well-being. Let Me Play have been working with Hatch End for over 5 years now, supporting teachers and students to ensure that they are achieving their core values: Co-operation, Ambition, Respect and Excellence.

Let Me Play has run a number of Saturday Schools programmes at Hatch End which have focused on supporting new Year 7 pupils who are falling behind in Maths and English. The programmes typically run for 10 weeks and engage students with focussed sessions in the areas they’re struggling with. Sessions are delivered with high staff to student ratios and there is time allocated at the end of every day for team-building and sports activities.

Another area of attention has been year 10 and 11 students, preparing for their GCSE’s. Small group study sessions and additional revision days have proved very beneficial in helping these students achieve their target grades.

We have worked with LMP for several years now and we have been very impressed with the quality of service and good value for money that they provide. The communication is excellent and tutors are well prepared for sessions.  I particularly like way GCSE maths tutors test students at the start of an intervention and again at the end so that we can see the impact of the interventions. Often there are two tutors in the room that really helps keep students motivated. We have used some of our Pupil Premium grant on extra tuition with LMP, which has contributed towards us achieving excellent outcomes for this group.  We also use our Catch Up funding to support students in Year 7 with maths and English’, David Robinson (Assistant Head, Hatchend High School).

Positive feedback from the school is supported by reporting, which shows that 81% of the previous year 11 group Let Me Play worked with showed improved attainment levels in their end of programme testing.

Reporting from the most recent Year 7 Saturday School delivered at Hatch End the showed that 96% of the students that attended increased in self-esteem and confidence as a result of the programme.
